Have American Workers Got What They Deserve?

If you are an American employee, the recent article from the Dutch columnist Ray Buursma will undoubtedly offend you.  In American workers got what they deserved, Buursma claims that American workers are stupid and lazy in the way they view economics and employment, that they lack initiative to advocate for themselves and for their fellow Americans.

Think of it like this:

100 people in a room order 100 pizzas.  When the pizzas arrive 80 people pay 85% of the cost of the pizzas and 20 people pay only 15%.  The 20 that only paid 15% take 80 of the pizzas. The 20 (that have the 80 pizzas) then complain about not getting enough and wanting even more. And the 80 people who covered most of the cost and got only 20 pizzas, do nothing about it.

The American standard of living over the last quarter century has decreased while millionaires have added 30 percent to their net wealth.  If you even still have a job, how do your benefits compare to a quarter century ago? Are you paying a higher or lower percentage of your income for health insurance? Does your company offer a pension plan, or do you now fund your own 401(k)?

As long as Americans continue to elect politicians who do nothing to stop hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs going overseas and who offer nothing but tax cuts to the super rich (as if that would stem the flow of disappearing jobs), this will only continue.

As long as Americans do not demand their leaders address America’s continuous outsourcing of jobs and trade imbalance (that no other country allows) or require foreign countries to buy a dollar’s worth of American goods for every dollar of goods they sell here, nothing will change.

And as long as Americans buy into the myth that unions are the cause of America’s demise, things will only get worse for them.

Are American workers really idiots?  Are they completely fooled by the corporations spending millions to deceive them?  Why aren’t they doing anything about all these inequities?
