Congresswoman Barbara Lee

Rep. Barbara Lee

The new legislation introduced on 2/9/2011 by Rep. Barbara Lee (CA-9) is called the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Expansion Act of 2011 to amend title IV of the Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2008 to provide for additional weeks of first-tier emergency unemployment compensation, and for other purposes (H.R.589).  This bill would provide 14 more weeks of UI compensation to 99ers as an extension of Tier 1.

As of 2/17/11, H.R.589 had 67 co-sponsors – none of them Republican. Until Republicans join the effort and agree to co-sponsor this bill, it stands little chance of passing. Without additional support, Republican leaders in the House will not bring the bill to the floor for a vote.
